Question 1: Read “Cross,”  Look up all of the different meanings of the word cross in a good dictionary. Choose three of those denotations of cross and explain how the title fits the poem.

Part 1: Note the name of the poet and then quote the lines which show that the speaker in the poem is not the poet.

Part 2: Write a complete paraphrase of the last two verses of “A Narrow Fellow in the Grass.”  In doing so, be sure to explain “nature’s people,” “transport of cordiality,” “tighter breathing,” and “zero at the bone” (verses 5 and 6).

 

Question 3: Read “Those Winter Sundays,” Explain what the father does to show his feelings about his family.

 

Question 4: Read “To Autumn,” Consult a good dictionary to learn the special meanings of the following words: hook, barred, sallows, bourn, croft. This poem is especially rich in sensuous imagery. List several of the many words and expressions in the poem which awaken each of the five senses 1) sight, 2) sound, 3) taste, 4) touch, and 5) smell
